The Australian game developer Aristocrat has released exact replicas of several of their popular land-based casino slot games, including Tiki Torch, for online players. The design, reels, and bonus features are the same in this totally authentic online version of Tiki Torch, which should appeal to fans of the original slot game.
However, the Tiki Torch game console and symbols are surprisingly dull for such a potentially fun and colorful theme which could be a turnoff for new players. Easily one of the more dated slot titles in Aristocrat’s repertoire, the flaming wild tiki torches featured in this game simply aren’t enough to truly light up these reels.

Theme and visuals
Carved wooden tiki torches are wild symbols that burst into flame with a simple animation when a wild tiki symbol is part of a winning combination. In the free spins game, the (non-playing card) regular symbols on the reels are transformed into flaming wild tiki torches as well, which usually means a number of wild symbols can hit on every free spin.
When we played the game, we got multiple wild symbols on every spin during the free spins.
Symbols like stylized oyster knives, Polynesian canoes, and overwater tiki huts are all part of a hunt for valuable Polynesian pearls, and those coveted pearls are scatter symbols on the reels that trigger the free spins bonus feature. Playing card symbols complete the offering as the lowest value symbols on the reels.
Polynesian-style carvings wallpaper the game console background. That background, the game design, and the reels remain the same throughout the game, and free spins are played on the same reels as the base game.
The sound effects are typical Aristocrat slot sounds, with retro clicking reel spins, arcade-style win jingles, and a loud buzzer that sounds when free games are triggered.
The sounds specific to Tiki Torch are relatively weak; sound effects for flaming wild symbols are drowned out by the loud win jingles and the free spins game completely lacks background music, unlike most other Aristocrat slots.
Betting options and paying combinations
This Tiki Torch slot features five reels and three rows of action (5×3 game configuration), with your choice of 20 lines that are marked by large, colorful line numbers. Use the buttons on the game console to choose 1, 5, 10, 15, or 20 lines and play with 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 credits per line.
One credit can equal $0.01, $0.02, $0.05, or $0.10 in free play mode. Using these options in free play mode, bets start as low as one penny (1 line x 1 credit x $0.01 = $0.01) and go up to $20.00 (20 lines x 10 credits x $0.10 = $20.00) per spin.
The lowest paying symbol combo pays out only two coins and the highest paying symbol (the wild Tiki Torch symbol) pays out 2,500 coins for five matching symbols (on a one-credit bet). In free play mode, the minimum payouts for regular symbol combinations range from $0.02 up to $25.00 (on a one-credit bet, at $0.01 a credit), and the maximum payouts range from $2 up to $2,500 (on a ten-credit bet, at $0.10 a credit).
Top paytable values (for five-of-a-kind combinations on a one-credit bet):
- Tiki Torch wild symbol – 2,500 coins
- Knife symbols – 1,000 coins
- Tiki hut symbols – 500 coins
- Canoe symbols – 500 coins
- Ace/King card symbols – 250 coins
- Queen/Jack card symbols – 200 coins
- 10/9 card symbols – 150 coins
- 8 card symbol – 100 coins
- Pearl scatter symbol – 50 coins
These five-of-a-kind payout values are published on the in-game paytable, which displays payouts for one-credit bets only. When you play at higher bet levels, it won’t be reflected in the paytable, so you can calculate potential payouts by multiplying the values in the paytable by the number of credits, and possibly the credit value, you are playing with.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to choose a specific number of autoplay spins. Instead, if you click the “Auto Start” button on the game console, the reels will start spinning and won’t stop until you click the button again.
The gamble feature is disabled during auto spins, but the reels will stop if the free spins bonus feature is triggered. Otherwise, the reels will keep spinning until your balance is too low to continue, so it pays to be vigilant if you use this feature.
The RTP (Return-To-Player) percentage for Tiki Torch is 94.85%, which is average compared to other Aristocrat slot games.
What jackpots are available?
Staying true to the original Tiki Torch land-based casino slot, there are no jackpots in this online game. Unfortunately, Aristocrat did not add any jackpot options for online players.
Additional features and bonuses
Bonus features are sparse outside of the Tiki Torch Free Games Feature that awards free spins with extra wild symbols on the reels.
Tiki Torch symbols are wild and light on fire when part of a winning combination. The wild tiki torch symbol is also the highest paying symbol on the reels, awarding up to 2,500 coins for five matching symbols.
Extra Wild Symbols
During the Free Games Feature, the knife, tiki hut, and canoe symbols all transform into burning wild tiki torch symbols on the reels. This effectively makes all of the regular symbols, except for playing card symbols, wild on the free spins reels.
Scatter symbols (pearl symbols) trigger the Tiki Torch Free Games Feature. Scatter symbols in this game are not like other slot games where scatter symbols can land anywhere on the reels to trigger bonus features. Instead, at least three scatter symbols must land on at least three reels, starting with the leftmost reel (reel one) with one scatter symbol on each adjacent reel, to trigger (or retrigger) the free games feature.
Tiki Torch Free Games Feature (Free Spins Bonus Game)
The main bonus feature awards eight free spins with extra wild symbols on the reels, and the feature can be retriggered.
You can choose to gamble your win from any winning spin, or your total win from the Free Games Feature, on the color or suit of a face-down card with a double/quadruple or nothing bet. Get the card color right and double your win or get the suit right and quadruple your win. If you get any guess wrong though, you’ll lose your entire gamble amount from the gamble feature though.
Who is this game ideal for?
This game would be ideal for people that enjoy playing the original Tiki Torch slot machine game at land-based casinos. Otherwise, the dated graphics and features could limit its appeal to penny slot players and beginners that appreciate simple or retro games.
Similar games from Aristocrat
Aristocrat currently doesn’t offer other tiki-themed slots, but the ancient Mayan theme in Sun & Moon is somewhat similar to the Polynesian theme in Tiki Torch.
Both games have 20 retro numbered paylines on the game screen, but the graphics in Sun & Moon are less dated looking. Sun & Moon awards between five and 50 free spins where all wins are doubled, compared to eight free spins with extra wilds in Tiki Torch.
Queen of the Nile, one of Aristocrat’s most popular slots, also has the same 20 retro numbered paylines on the console, and has a very similar game configuration and similarly dated graphics. These two Aristocrat games look like they are both of the same vintage.
The Queen of the Nile free spins bonus game offers 15 free spins with a x3 multiplier on all wins.
Free Spins Bonus Game – The main bonus feature awards eight free spins with extra wild symbols on the reels, plus possible retriggers for more free spins.
Extra Wild Symbols – All regular symbols on the reels (except scatter and playing card symbols) turn into wild symbols during free spins games.
Authentic Casino Slot – This online game is exactly the same as the original Tiki Torch slot found at land-based casinos.
Penny Bet/Low Stake Options – Perfect for penny slots players.
Easy To Play – The options and features are simple enough for anyone to play.
Limited Bonus Features – Very few bonus features are offered compared to newer online slots, and there are no interactive bonus features.
“Scatter” Symbols – The “scatter” symbols aren’t truly scatter symbols. These “scatter” symbols must be on adjacent reels, starting on reel one, to trigger the bonus feature, potentially making the bonus feature harder to hit.
Dated Graphics – The design is authentic to the original slot, but it is particularly dated and dull looking.
No Jackpots – Jackpot options have not been added for online players.
Win Effects – The win counter can be difficult to see, and there are no visual effects to highlight big wins. The coin fountain win effect in the original land-based slot game is missing from this online version of the game (in free play mode).
- Graphics and Design- 1.75/5: We’re rating this game below average due to the particularly dated design. Although this online version of Tiki Torch is an authentic adaptation of the original casino slot game, the graphics are surprisingly weak, especially for what should be a bold and colorful tiki theme.
- Sound Effects- 2/5: The sound effects in the online version of Tiki Torch are the same as in the original casino slot game. However, apart from the typical retro slot sounds Aristocrat uses, the sound effects for the flaming tiki torches are barely audible over the blaring retro win jingles. The game also lacks background music (Polynesian drumming would have worked well), which knocks our rating down to below average.
- Jackpot Value- 0/5: There are no jackpot options in this game.
- Replay Value – 1.75/5: We’re also rating the replay value below average due to the surprisingly dated graphics and the lackluster bonus features. We’re sure long-time fans of the casino game will be repeat players, but we don’t see much in this game that would entice other players to come back for more. Penny slot players and beginning players who appreciate simple, retro games that are easy to play could be repeat players, but there are other Aristocrat games that have more to offer.
