The 40th anniversary celebrations continue at Resorts Casino Hotel in September with visitors receiving the chance to spin a piece of history.
The first-ever slot machine in Atlantic City is on display in the property’s Margaritaville Lobby. What’s more, it’s still operational. On Sunday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., visitors can take a free spin on the machine with the chance to win up to $2,500 in slot cash.
All Resorts visitors receive one free pull on the historic one-armed bandit. The classic slot features a wooden casing and stainless steel front. It is a $1 machine accepting anywhere from one to three coins. The three-reel and single-line game was the first used at Resorts when it opened in 1978.
Atlantic City’s first legal casino
Resorts opened on May 26, 1978, as Atlantic City’s first legal casino. In fact, it was the first legal casino-hotel in the United States outside the state of Nevada.
It opened on the Atlantic City Boardwalk with 84 table games and 893 slot machines spread across a 33,735-square-foot casino floor.
However, over the next four decades, Resorts has grown to more than double its original size. The 83,000 square-foot casino on the property now boasts more than 1,500 slot machines and over 70 table games. Additionally, a full-service sportsbook opened on the property this summer.
Resorts’ accommodations include two hotel towers: the 462-room Rendezvous Tower and the newly renovated 480-room Ocean Tower. Resorts Casino Hotel now sits on 11 acres at the northern end of the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
It became a Mohegan Sun property in 2012. Resorts is still owned by Atlantic City native and New York real estate developer Morris Bailey. However, it has been managed by Mohegan Gaming & Entertainment since that time.
$100 million in renovations
The past five years has seen more than $100 million in renovations on the property. Improvements include:
- The $35 million Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville and Landshark Bar & Grill Entertainment Complex, opened in May 2013
- The Quickbites Food Court, opened in July 2014
- Resorts’ iGaming Lounge, opened in April 2015
- A $5 million Conference Center, opened in August 2015
The property’s 40th anniversary celebrations began on Memorial Day Weekend 2018 and continued throughout the summer. Now, the end of summer means the end of the official 40th anniversary celebrations. However, it’s not the end of high-value promotions on the property.
