Acorn Pixie is a five-reel, 30-line, fantasy-themed slot from Bally Technologies out of Las Vegas, Nevada. Bally has been providing land-based casinos with video slot terminals for many years, and today, you can access much of their catalog at online casinos as well.

Acorn Pixie may be familiar to regular casino patrons, as it has long been a mainstay in establishments across the United States. This game has a fantastical fairy theme and offers you the unique opportunity to buy a bonus round should the reels not be spinning in your favor.

Themes & visuals

The art style of Acorn Pixie is relatively serious, with semi-realistic portraits of pixies and fairy women on the sides of the reels and similar icons for the wild symbols. Other symbols also fit the fairy theme and include:

  • Flowers
  • Dragonflies
  • Toadstools and mushrooms
  • Ladybugs

Occasionally, a fairy wrapped around an acorn will fall onto the reels. This creates a larger fairy picture that acts as a wild symbol and covers four slots on the reel. The animation is basic and not overly detailed.

When it comes to audio, the main game has a sci-fi, synthesized jingle that plays only when the reels are spinning. The music stops and starts, but we found it perfectly listenable.

The music that plays during the bonus rounds, however, was truly excellent – an up-tempo and rousing fantasy score that fits the theme of the game nicely and adds some excitement to the bonus play. Even though it had echoes of Lord of the Rings or similar epic fantasy classics, it seemed original to us, which is a big plus for a slot game.

Betting options & paying combinationsAcorn Pixie

Acorn Pixie has 30 paylines, plus a lot more in the bonus section. Unfortunately, the number of paylines you can bet on can’t be adjusted, and there’s no option to have them overlaid on the reels.

Acorn Pixie does offer auto spin, however, with the standard Bally customization options for this feature. This means you can set the auto spin to five, 25, 50, or 100 spins. You can also choose to stop the auto spins after a certain number of losses, or after a particularly big win. This is a feature that will be appreciated by experienced or high-budget slots players.

Bets on Acorn Pixie start at $0.50 total and go as high as $250 per spin. This is average when it comes to limits in slots from Bally and should suit most players reasonably well.

One thing we should point out is that Acorn Pixie declines to show you your bet per line. This is a different system from many other Bally slots, but it shouldn’t affect the playing experience much.

The return-to-player (RTP) on this slot is 96%, which is on the higher end of average. The highest possible standard win at max bet is $5000 for five wild symbols.

For this slot, Bally also publishes the RTP of the bonus games as they use an entirely different set of reels and can be purchased for cash.

There are three tiers of bonus games available to buy, listed below with their RTPs:

  • $100 bonus game (12 spins): 96% RTP
  • $40 bonus game (eight spins): 94% RTP
  • $20 bonus game (six spins): 92% RTP

What about the jackpots?Acorn Pixie Bonus

Sadly, there are no jackpots available in Acorn Pixie. This slot has been around for a while and is still popular; however, there’s a lot of competition fighting for your attention in today’s market. Not offering a big-money jackpot will hurt any game’s chances of holding your interest.

Additional features & bonus rounds

Acorn Pixie has a reasonable range of bonuses and extra features. There are three different wild symbols, a bonus scatter, and extra wilds that get dropped on the reel randomly. There’s also a bonus game with an entirely different set of reels, paylines, and symbols.

What’s different about Acorn Pixie is your ability to buy a bonus round.

Wild symbols

The wild symbols in Acorn Pixie are your standard semi-realist fantasy fairy fare with a touch of gothic. Think magical orbs, corsets, and striped socks.

Two of these are standard wild symbols that appear on the reels normally. The other is a larger wild symbol that falls as a leaf onto the reels and covers four squares. This can turn many lines into winners in one go.

Scatter symbols

There’s only one scatter symbol and that is the bonus symbol. Another similar fairy icon, three of these must appear on the reels to activate the bonus round. Alternatively, you can buy access to the bonus round through the three tiers of options detailed above.

It’s possible Bally reduced the frequency of naturally occurring bonus rounds to encourage you to purchase them. For reference, we only saw the bonus round appear on the reels once in about an hour of play.

Bonus roundsAcorn Pixie Bonus 2

You play the Acorn Pixie bonus round on a completely different set of five reels, with a different payout table. It also features 20 extra paylines, for a total of 50.

Each spin in the bonus round throws between one and five acorns onto the reels. These acorns reveal part of the background picture, and those slots then become wild for the rest of the remaining spins.

With all those extra paylines, and the potential for most of the reels to become wild, there are some big wins possible here. Although, the biggest top prize for any one payline is $375 at a maximum bet, which is not huge.

You get seven spins on the bonus reels if you enter the round by pulling three bonus symbols on the main game. If you buy your entry, you’ll have either six, eight, or 12 spins.

Unfortunately, there is no way of pulling more free spins during the bonus round and extending your run.

Who is this game ideal for?

Acorn Pixie has the bet limits and features to suit most slots players. The gameplay, however, is not diverse enough to hold the interest of experienced or dedicated slots fans.

This is a title that is relatively simple and doesn’t have too many scatter symbols or bonus rounds. Combine that with the ability to buy a bonus round without having to wait to see it, and it’s clear that Acorn Pixie appeals to a more casual audience.

Similar games by Bally

Lady Robin Hood and Sword of Destiny are two similar, fantasy-themed slots from Bally. Both feature forest and adventuring iconography. For something completely different, try Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This medieval-inspired slot also includes fairies, but it takes itself less seriously and has the added attraction of a big-name license.

What’s hot?Acorn Pixie Table

Unique bonus game mechanics: Acorn Pixie’s completely separate set of reels for the bonus games is a novel feature and one we enjoyed. Being able to buy the bonus was also interesting, but the overall value this offers is questionable.

Great music: The music and sound effects in Acorn Pixie’s bonus round are great and certainly one of Bally’s better offerings.

Bet sizes and auto spin: Being able to bet anywhere between $0.50 and $250 per spin allows this game to appeal to a wide spectrum of player budget sizes and experience. The auto spin feature is a useful addition for some players.

What’s not?

No jackpot:  Lacking a guaranteed big-money prize in today’s slots market is just not up to par.

Only one scatter & one bonus round: With only one scatter symbol, one bonus round, and only three wild symbols, there’s not a huge repertoire of features in Acorn Pixie. If you are a dedicated slots player, you might find this title gets stale quickly.

Final ratings

  • Graphics and design – 3/5: Acorn Pixie’s themes and visuals aren’t particularly unique or inspiring, but Bally did a good job innovating the bonus round.
  • Sound effects – 4/5: One of the stronger points to this game, we single out the bonus music as being particularly great.
  • Jackpot value – 0/5: We give a disappointing zero to Acorn Pixie on this one.
  • Replay value – 2.5/5: With no jackpots and only one type of bonus round, we couldn’t give Acorn Pixie a great score here. Being able to drop in and boot up a bonus round with no fuss was a nice addition, though.
